How do i look after my extensions?

Whether you are new to hair extensions or have used them in the past, it is always a good idea to refresh your memory on how to properly take care of them. It is important to get into a good routine with your hair extensions from the start because with regular care and attention, you can ensure your hair extensions last as long as possible and stay looking healthy. Please check out our hair extension maintenance recommendations, below and if in doubt please reach out to us or speak with your extension technician.

Can i wash my extensions?

Sure can! You can wash your extensions - But with special care!
This is one of the most important parts of extension aftercare to ensure that your extensions stay clean and fresh and to avoid slippage from a build up of oils and dirt.

Please see our haircare Holy Grail below.

WAIT 48 HOURS
It is paramount to wait atleast 48 hours after application before washing that mane! This allows time for your tapes to fully adhere to your hair. Washing within this time frame will disrupt the application process which could cause your extensions to slide out.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I BE WASHING MY HAIR?
Unlike your own hair, hair extensions are not able to produce natural oils, which is why you should not wash them any more often than 1-2 times a week using a professional, sulphate-free shampoo. Never use a volumising shampoo as they raise the cuticle resulting in damage and tangling. Excessively washing your extensions will cause them to become dry and brittle and thats not good for anyone! To help extend the lifetime of your extensions, be sure to follow your shampoo with a moisturising masque, applied from the midpoint of the extension to ends. Its is key to avoid the root area with any oils/conditioners/masques as this will weaken the tapes bond resulting in slippage.

BE GENTLE.
Remember to treat your mane with the care it deserves. Never scrub to pull on your extensions whilst washing or conditioning - this can raise the cuticles causing unnecessary matting and knotting.
We recommend washing your hair using a gentle massaging motion - like milking a cow.

CONDITIONERS, OILS & MASQUESHair extensions do not have their own oil source to it is key to keep them hydrated, to maintain that shine you should be using a conditioner every time you wash your hair and using a hair masque once a week. Follow by towel drying and applying hair oil and leave in conditioner - we moisturise our skin, so why not our hair?!
The key point with extensions is how you do it, you should only be applying conditioners, masques and oils from the mid point of the hair down, imagine where a pony tail would sit. This is to ensure that the oils in the products don't break down the adhesive in the tape leading to slippage.

USE SULPHATE FREE PRODUCTS.
Sulphate free products are your extension’s best friend. Sulphates and parabens are chemicals that are used to remove dirt and debris. However, they are extremely harsh and are used in products such as dish soap and laundry detergent. Using products that contain these ingredients will shorten the lifetime of your extensions - causing them to become dry, brittle, and unmanageable.

Can i heat style my hair?

Of course you can! Mane Hair extensions are made from Remy Russian Hair - meaning you can curl, style, and straighten them as your own. In order to extend the lifetime of your extensions, keep your hot tool under 180 degrees and use a professional grade heat protectant.

Can i wash my hair with extensions in?

This is one of the most frequently searched questions in relation to caring for hair extensions, as many feel nervous about pulling extensions out or damaging the natural hair in some way by not brushing them correctly.

To avoid any issues it is important to use a hair extension friendly brush, holding your hair secure in a ponytail position working from the bottom to the top, inch by inch, not from the top to bottom. By starting at the tips of the hair and working your way up to the root, you are removing any tangle an inch at a time, rather than pulling the tangles all the way down the hair. Once you have got to the top on the ponytail you can remove you hand and brush through the root area.

To avoid any excessive matting we advise to brush through the root area thoroughly twice a day, and after any gym/swim sessions!

To do this brush your hair as above, once this step is complete, start at the nape and working your way up to the top in sections 1-2 inches deep.

This will prevent hair breakage, and if you are wearing Tape-In Extensions, this will reduce pulling and tugging on your hair extension panels.

Can i brush my extension when they are wet?

Yes, you can brush your extensions when they are wet. However, hair is notoriously weaker when wet so ensure that this is done slowly and gently. If you are overly aggressive when brushing your wet extensions, this can cause breakage and damage to your own hair and the extensions themselves! Proceed with caution.

What about gym, swim & sun?

GYM
We recommend tying your hair up in a ponytail or bun for the gym to protect your hair from sweat and excessive oils - Following your workout please follow our brushing guildines.

AVOID CHLORINE & SALT WATER
Chlorine & salt water can loosen your extensions, cause colour change especially in lighter shades and can also cause severe matting and stripping of the hair moisture. If you go swimming, we recommend either wearing a swim cap to minimise the likelihood of your extensions getting wet, or keeping your hair tied up and out of the water!

SUN & SUN CREAM
UV rays can be unsuspectingly harsh on your hair extensions, exposure to UV can cause your extensions to discolour. To protect your hair from UV we recommend using a UV protection spray and for extra points where a sun hat!

Although sun cream is great for our skin, it contains chemicals that can stain and alter the colour of your extensions. remember to wash those hands after applying suncream and avoid getting any in your hair.

Will extensions damage my natural hair?

With proper care and maintenance, our extensions will not damage your hair. Please only have your extensions fitted by a qualified extension technician. Our Mane Tape-In application is seamless and natural with little to no damage.

If your extensions are applied correctly and aftercare is followed there is no reason why your natural hair would suffer, most people find that their natural hair grows thicker and longer whilst wearing extensions due to less heat exposure from styling tools.

How long should i wait inbetween maintenance appointments?

It is essential to have regular maintenance and check up appointments for your Tape-In Extensions. You should book your Tape-In Extension appointment every 6-8 weeks, with you qualified technician.
Extending the length beyond 8 weeks can result in your natural root and extensions becoming matted and tangled.
